Bathroom Remodel Checklist: From Planning to Fixtures
A bathroom remodel goes far more smoothly when you plan it in the right order. Use this checklist to move from idea to finished room without the costly surprises.
1. Set your budget and priorities
Decide what matters most — a bigger shower, a double vanity, better storage — and set a realistic budget with a 10–15% cushion for the unexpected. Knowing your priorities up front keeps every later decision easy.
2. Plan the layout
Keeping the sinks, toilet and shower close to their existing locations saves significantly on plumbing. If you do move things, confirm you have the required clearances around the toilet, vanity and the shower door's swing or slide.
3. Choose your fixtures
Select the big pieces early, since they drive both the look and the lead times: shower door or enclosure, vanity, sink, faucet, toilet, mirror and accessories. Measure carefully before you order — our Shower Door Measuring & Buying Guide walks you through the shower opening.
4. Pick a finish and style
Choose one finish family for your plumbing fixtures and coordinate the hardware around it. Not sure which to pick? See How to Choose the Right Finish for Your Bathroom.
5. Order early
Order your fixtures before demolition begins so nothing holds up the project. Double-check sizes and finishes on every item — glass and stone can't be trimmed once they're made.
6. Sequence the work
A typical order of operations: demolition → rough plumbing and electrical → cement board and waterproofing → tile → paint → install vanity, toilet and fixtures → hang the shower door → final connections and accessories.
7. Don't forget the details
Plan for good ventilation (an exhaust fan), both task and ambient lighting, enough storage, and the small finishing touches — towel bars, hooks, a robe hook and a mirror — that make the room feel complete.
